Summary0000025: 573 Not Reading ISO
DescriptionWhen booting with Dip Switch 4 turned off and the security cartridge removed, the ISO is not being read off the root directory of the USB drive

Behavior is to display BootVer 1.95 and Onboard

OR

With Dip 4 enabled, it displays a check screen but hangs at CD-R

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong that could get into the Install menu for clarity

DDR Extreme Cabinet
Running vanilla original install disk and security cart

Is there additional documentation that explains the install process for a 573?

That should be about all there is to it - how did you set up the USB flash drive?

We formatted as FAT32 on a 128GB sandisk USB drive

USB is plugged directly into the USB A port

ISO is in the root directory

If you connect a computer to the micro USB port you should get a virtual serial port you can access - if you use that to run the "status" command, what does it show?

It doesn't seem to be creating a virtual COM when I connect it to a computer. Does it need to be connected to the molex connector on the board for power?

Yes, on V3 power is always required on the Molex power connector, it can't be powered by USB like the V1/V2 versions (this was an attempt to support more USB drives, which sometimes had issue with the 5V provided this way).

Hmm, the lack of a disk and the unavailable> message make it look like it's not detecting the USB drive. Do you have another you can try?

Tried a second USB drive, completely different brand, same result.

What brands and models were they? Each unit is tested with a USB2 high speed drive so the port has been tested. Is there any visible damage?

Tried with a Sandisk USB 3.0 and an SD card via a USB reader

Is there a preferred brand of USB 2.0 I should try?

One other thing that occurred to me is to confirm the USB stick is formatted MBR and not GPT. The latter isn't currently supported.

Regarding drives, I've tried a few Sandisk Cruzer Blade drives that seemed to work fine. I also used some "Eastfun" drives from Amazon but they're very small (8Gb), I just got them for doing firmware updates and doing USB experiments. For USB3 I did also dry a Sandisk SDCZ430-256G-G46 which is a USB3 drive that seems to work, but it can take a few seconds to mount which is suboptimal for fast startup times, and I also have a Samsung Bar Plus 128Gb USB3 drive which seems to work fine, though I've had issues with it in other machines.

Regarding SD card readers I've found some work and some don't (one of the ones I have that works is a random no-name one, and I have a Sandisk one that doesn't work).

The drivers provided by the chip manufacturer are quite picky so I've been trying to fix bugs to make them better, so if you can confirm what drives you tried I can try and get them if that is indeed the issue.

Tried a clean install on a brand new USB 2.0 SDCZ60-032G-G46T (32GB)

Formatted FAT32, added the ISO, and confirmed it's formatted as MBR

Still got the same hang in both MICRO and USB 2.0 slot.

I don't see any damage on the USB 2.0 slot, but I'm checking puTTY now to see if the disk is mounting

Appreciate your help so far. I was hoping this was just a drive issue :(

Good news possibly?

That seems promising - what happens when you plug it back into the 573 now?

Hooked it up again

Machine posts and displays BootVer 1.95 in the top left

Bottom right it displays onboard

and then the machine just hangs

When I disconnect the IDE sim and put the CD Rom drive back in. It displays BootVer 1.95 in the top left and CD-ROM in the bottom right, then boots into the CD-ROM.

We inspected the board and noticed that there may be an 8th mix chip added onto the board (looks cleaner and newer than the rest of the board), and stranger is the CD Rom boots without needing the security cart plugged in.

The board may have been modified at some point to conflict with the IDE sim? But we're just guessing at this point since all signs point to it should just boot the super disk, but it won't!

Happy to provide further info or try other methods if y'all have suggestions.

Yes, the behaviour is a little odd, if it didn't like the drive I'd expect the old "CDR BAD" message, it's odd that it's just hanging.

One other thing you can try is that with USB connected, when you power on immediately run "monitor" on the command line and it'll show the commands it receives over the IDE port from the 573. Perhaps there'll be a clue in there.
