Summary0000027: ATAPI error "ATAPI Incompatible" in BIOS
DescriptionIDE Simulator v3 is detected on motherboard when automatically probed or manually set as CDROM in AMI BIOS. However I get an "ATAPI Incompatible" after saving/exiting the BIOS setup during the drive checking prior to boot.
Steps To ReproducePlug in IDE Simulator v3 on any IDE channel
Turn on the computer and load the bios
Auto-detect or manually configure CDROM in the BIOS settings
IDE Simulator v3 is detected automatically as "CDROM"
Verify the 'status' command shows ATAPI CD/DVD Drive (auto), the Door is closed, and Image mounted "ubcd535.iso" is mounted. Used 'drive search' to cycle through several good ISO images. [see screenshot]
Verify the 'interface' command shows Config: Master (selected: YES) [see screenshot]
Boot the computer and BIOS errors out with the ATAPI error seen on screenshot. At this point, not even. Computer will boot from floppy or HDD per my boot sequence if I hit F1 to continue, but no CD drive is present after that.
Additional InformationVerified BIOS updated to latest TVX0917A
Verified other IDE devices (HDD, CDROM) work fine
Tried changing various CDROM parameters (LBA, 32-bit, block mode)
Tried BIOS safe settings

Other forums have mentioned Cabling and use of Cable Select with other emulators reporting the same error. However verified good cables and changing from Master to Slave in the console makes no difference.

I just tested the IDE Simulator v3 with a USB-IDE attachment and it does mount the appropriate cdrom image on my Mac M1, so this appears to be specifically relating to ATAPI and/or use with older motherboards. Looking for any suggestions how to make it work.

I'll take a look - I did most of my testing on a 386, which was very picky due to the IDE bus being wired somewhat directly to the ISA bus, but that machine was old enough that it doesn't actually check what types of drives are plugged in. I do have some other machines, some of which will identify drives, so I'll dig them out.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to assist. Love this device, been wanting something like this for years. Now I need to add some hardware to the board!!

Sure, I'll let you know, though it sounds like you've already tried a few BIOS settings combinations Haven't managed to reproduce yet but there's a million combinations of PC. Based on some of the links I'm sure you've also found it sounds like some specific BIOSs were super picky about being on cable select, and I can try implementing a cable select mode since that pin is hooked up but just not used just now. I'd be surprised if it works but definitely worth a try ;)

I don't know if it changes the circumstances, but if I unplug the IDE cable I get the same ATAPI incompatible error as when it is plugged in. Seems more like a generic "could not communicate with atapi drive" error even though the bios autodetect does detect a "CDROM" on Primary or Secondary as configured in the IDE CDROM SIM interface. I'm not sure how far to really dig into this seeming one-off compatibility issue, but perhaps if it's of value to you I can try an older bios or something. At this point I'm just grasping straws since it's a hard stop at the BIOS and not really losing any sleep to be honest. Let me know what you think.
